The Amazon constitutes a strategic point on the planet: it contains 20% of the worlds fresh water reserves and is home to a great number and diversity of wild life species. Our children and our children´s children depend on the correct management of these resources to be able to enjoy the marvels that the tropical rainforest offers.
The town of Leticia is the capital of the department of Amazonas in Colombia. It is a frontier town that limits with Tabatinga, the border town in Brazil, and Santa Rosa, a small village in Perú.
Leticia has a population of 27,000 inhabitants, which represents 70% of the department´s total population. Its inhabitants include people from varios local Indian communities, plus mestizos and many inmigrants from all regions of the country.
In general, the education offered at colleges and schools here has little or nothing to do with the reality of this Amazonic region, or with its position as a three frontier town. There is very little being done to foment attitudes of identification, valorization and respect that would prepare individuals and particpants with criteria that could influence in a positive way the future of this great Amazonic region of Colombia.
The state schools do not have the infrastructure or the necessary conditions to accomodate all the eligible children in the area.
